In your quest for a high traffic website, remember this:

Don't get discouraged.

Remember that you are competing for eyeballs with many professional writers, and many people whose job it is to write internet articles and create internet websites.

Companies spend billions of dollars on web marketing and internet advertising every year and you are competing with those billions for eyeballs.

Given all this, you should be proud for getting single or double digit traffic on your webpages.

High Traffic Website - Why Haven't I Gotten My 10,000 Eyeballs Per Day Website Yet?!

High Traffic Website Tip 1

Many little numbers add up to a big number.

Many people are only interested in creating the high traffic jackpot website - the website to end all other websites and bring in hordes of eyeballs. You may read much about how others are easily creating such websites, but:

  • They may be exagerating the truth.
  • They may have gotten lucky.
  • They may have found their high traffic jackpot website only after many years of experience in designing, creating, and promoting websites.

It is good to quest for a high traffic jackpot website; but in the meantime, try creating many webpages on a variety of subjects. Each page you create will be a learning experience that will get you closer to your holy grail. In addition, each of those pages may bring in single or double digit traffic which, if you have many pages, can add up to a nice, big number.

Make sure to give each webpage your best effort but do not be too much of a perfectioninst.

If you spend too much time overthinking and overcorrecting a page before publishing it, you end up with less total content, less feedback, and less experience. By creating more webpages with a wide variety of information, you end up learning more, and are less affected by bad reviews on any one particular page. So, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

High Traffic Website Tip 1 - Many little numbers add up to a big number.

High Traffic Website Tip 2

If you don't build it, nobody will come.

Part of getting a high traffic website is to find the right topic at the right time. Do not be afraid to test out different topics and make many mistakes. If you don't jump it and test out your ideas, you will never know which ones work and which ones don't.

There are many strategies to finding a good topic:

  • Write about something you know. If you are writing about something you know and are passionate about, it will likely be useful and enjoyable to other readers. An informational and well-written website may not make a big initial splash but they often get many returning eyeballs, and traffic that increases over time.
  • Write about something provocative. There is a lot of information on the internet, and much more being created every day. Eyeballs have very small attention spans and will likely skip over normal sounding titles and pages. If you go visit digg.com, you will know what I am talking about. Browse popular pages on Digg and learn how to break from the pack, pick provocative topics, and write in a provocative style.
  • Write about something that many others care about. Find out what online people want to know most about. Use Google Trends to find the most searched for keywords, visit Digg to find the most dugged topics, and visit Yahoo!Answers to see what questions people are asking.
  • Write about something unique. The problem with writing about popular topics is that everything has already been said. The challenge is to choose a popular item, and then write about it from a unique and original perspective. You could choose an uncommon item, and write about it from any perspective you want, but uncommon items are uncommon because there is less interest in them. Another strategy is to try and predict the next high traffic item, and get in before the curve.

High Traffic Website Tip 2 - If you don't build it, nobody will come.
The most important thing to remember while creating high traffic websites is to have fun doing it.

You also need to get your keywords, titles, and web adresses right by using seo (search engine optimization) tools but I won't belabor them here because there are many webpages that talk about these tools. You may start with Google AdWords, which I find to be extremely useful.

The most important thing to remember while creating high traffic websites is to have fun doing it.

If you are not having fun, and are just trying to hit some magic traffic number, it is not going to be very worthwhile. Even though it may be difficult to get traffic, it is orders of magnitude more difficult to convert that traffic into money. You are probably never going to get really rich from creating blogs, websites, or hubs; so you might as well have some fun doing it.

Developing the skills needed to create a high traffic website takes time. Be patient and keep a positive attitude.

The journey is much more important than the destination.

High Traffic Website Tip 3

Put yourself out there and develop a thick skin.

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" ~~[Unknown]

If you create many websites but do not put in the effort to promote them, nobody will know to come looking for them. Promoting your website is probably the most challenging and difficult aspect of this quest for high traffic.

To promote your website effectively you must be willing to put yourself out there.

  • Join a variety of social communities (e.g. Facebook, mySpace, HubPages, youTube, Flickr), build up a network of fans, and crosslink all relevant content.
  • Join social bookmarking sites (e.g. StumbleUpon, Digg) and create links for your webpages. Do not join too many of them, because to make them work for you, you need to participate and not only promote your own links. Only add your own links very occasionally. If you spam the social bookmarking sites, you and your link-site may get banned; and your website may get penalized or dereferenced by search engines.
  • Be bold and speak up on a variety of message boards, newsgroups, and forums; including Yahoo!Answers, Yahoo!Groups, and Hubpages Forum. Post often, ask and answer questions, and always be courteous. Positive language and helping others is personally rewarding and will often translate into traffic.

Which is most important for getting a high traffic website?

  • Writing a lot of content.
  • Picking the right topic to write about.
  • Promoting your website effectively.
  • Other. I will elaborate in comments.

By putting yourself out there you risk getting mud thrown on your face. You will find some fans, but because of human nature and the anonymity on the internet, you will likely face a whole lot more negativity.

Do not get discouraged, do not take it personally, and do not be embarrassed by it.

Just learn all that you can from all your feedback (even the vitriolic, sarcastic, ones) and move on.

CMHypno, I agree with you whole-heartedly. It is difficult for me to imagine writing just for money. I like learning about SEO techniques and I think it is fun testing out various strategies to get traffic, but there are many things I would not do just to get a few clicks.

Thanks for dropping by :)

This is a great article! I'm glad to stumble upon it. I am also looking for ways to promote my work from home free website. I hope to build up more traffic soon.

Thanks Louidam1,

I have also been focused on building up my home website lately. It is actually a lot of fun. I recently wrote a bunch of articles on how to create a comment box in your static web pages.

I am currently working on a highly customizable WordPress theme - will write about it once it is done. It is all very exciting :)

My goal is to attract 1,000 views a day here, ambitious aint I? :D

I do think that this will happen through a combination of volume as a lot of small numbers do add up, and continuing to develop my skills in finding good traffic topics to write to. I guess you could say I am learning how to play with keyword tools :). The trick I missed at the start was to ignore the competition bar, go to google and see how many regular (not advertised) sites there are to compete with. Competition between advertisers has no relevance to the competition for organic raking.

Ambition is a great thing - keeps one focused and motivated. I am also a big fan. :)

Good point about competition from other sites. It was also something I learned at HubPages.

And the small numbers definitely do add up!

I mostly only write about topics that interest me though, so it is a balance between writing articles that are fun for me and articles that I think people will want to read. :)

The word about patience is appropriate! Building relationships takes a lot of time and effort.

I also liked your point #2 - if you don't try, you are guaranteed to receive zero traffic. If you hang yourself out there and take the chance, you may get only a few viewers. However, I am aware of an older neighbor that started a fan site related to American Idol. She never considered herself a great writer, but she does make great observations. She gets over a 1,000 visits per day.

This can work!

I've had this hub bookmarked for a while to read, and I'm glad I did. It was a very informative and well-written article. It just caused me to bookmark about 12 more, so my list continues to grow. I may never catch up. But I've never had so much fun losing ground!

"But I've never had so much fun losing ground!"

LOL! I feel the same way. There is so much to learn, do, and have fun with in this online writing/blogging enterprise.

I see it as an awesome hobby that is not only cheap, but also brings in a fair amount of satisfaction and some $$$ at the side. Good stuff!
