How to Create a WordPress Photo Gallery
By shibashake
When I first made a WordPress blog, one of the first things I wanted to do was create a photo gallery for my article.
It seems like it should be an easy task, but I had a difficult time figuring out how to create my gallery from the WordPress Edit Post interface.
Here is a step by step tutorial on how to -
- Create and insert a photo gallery into your WordPress article.
- Remove images from your WordPress gallery.
- Add new images into your WordPress gallery.
Upload Images to Our WordPress Gallery
First, we need to edit or create the Post for our WordPress gallery. We can do this by clicking on the Posts tab to the left of our WordPress Dashboard. Then click on Add New to create a new post or blog article.
Enter in a title for our post and we are ready to create our first WordPress gallery.
Step 1. Click on the Add an Image button right under our article title.
Step 2.
This will open a pop-up window that allows us to upload images from our computer, from a web URL, or from our WordPress media library.
For now, we just want to upload images from our computer so we click on the Select Files button, navigate to the directory of our choice, and Ctrl-Click or Shift-Click to select multiple images.
Step 3.
Once we are done uploading all our images, click on the Save all changes button at the bottom of the pop-up window.
Customize Our WordPress Gallery
After clicking on Save all changes, we will be presented with our new gallery.
From this gallery screen we may further customize how our gallery will appear in our blog article. In particular we may set -
- Link thumbnails to - Whether our gallery thumbnails should point to the source image file (Image File) or to the theme formatted image file (Attachment Page).
- Order images by - Which attribute to use to order our images.
- Order - Whether to sort our images in ascending or descending order.
- Gallery columns - The number of columns to use to show our images.
Once we are happy with our gallery settings, click on the Insert Gallery button at the bottom of the window.
This will insert the gallery into our post. We may now add whatever text we want above or below our WordPress gallery. For example, in the screen-shot below we have added the text "This is my first WordPress gallery!" below our gallery object.
We may also edit our gallery settings at any point by selected our gallery and then clicking on the Edit gallery button at the top-left of the gallery object.
We Are Done!
And just like that, we are done!
Remember to click on the Publish or Update button to save your new gallery enhanced blog article.
Click on the Preview button at any time to get a quick look at your WordPress gallery.
Managing Our WordPress Gallery
After creating a gallery, we may want to add new images to it, or remove old images from it.
To achieve these tasks, click on the Media Library tab on the left our WordPress Dashboard.
Notice that the images we just uploaded into our WordPress gallery are listed here. Also note that these images are attached to the Post we just created for our gallery.
Remove Images from Our WordPress Gallery
To remove an image from our gallery, simply delete it in the Media Library screen.
Single images can be deleted by hovering your mouse over the image row and selecting the Delete Permanently option.
Images can be deleted in bulk by -
- Click on the checkbox of all the images to be deleted.
- Select the Delete Permanently option from the Bulk Actions drop-down menu above.
- Click on the Apply button to delete the selected images.
Add Images to Our WordPress Gallery
To add an image to our WordPress gallery -
- Click on the Posts tab and edit our newly created gallery Post.
- Then click on the Add an Image button right below our Post title.
- Select the images we want to add into our gallery from our local computer.
- Click on the Save all changes button once we are done.
WordPress Gallery Plugins
There are a variety of WordPress gallery plugins that allow you to display styled and interactive javascript photo galleries. For example, the screen-shot below shows a Noobslide gallery rendered using the Shiba Gallery plugin.
Join HubPages and use it to help drive traffic to your WordPress site.
Hello reaperOscuro,
Yeah I had problems with the WordPress Media Library system as well. It is a bit awkward, but after you get used to it, it gets a lot better.
There are some quirks, but the nice thing about WordPress is that you can always customize it with a plugin or by writing your own code.
Good luck with your site!
Ah, glad to see how you create a gallery: it's very ignorant of me but I just couldn't figure it out -hey I assumed that you added to the media gallery then attached to a post/page and voila, gallery! So, thanks again.
Was trying to achieve the same effect via your media library plug-in but lol failing there too (de-tached the header image by mistake and it seemed to corrupt it), so will probably study it a bit more before re-attempting.
Thanks!
Sharing, up-votes, and comments are always great appreciated. Give me a buzz if you have any problems with WordPress galleries.
ah, it looks like I found someone who knows a little something about WordPress. I admit, I'm still not that good with it. Thank you for this tutorial. Step by steps are awesome.
Voted Up, useful and very worth sharing (which I am off to do)
Thanks for dropping by BlissfulWriter.
Let me know if you have any WordPress photo gallery questions. :)
Hey QS, good to see you! WordPress is actually a lot of fun. It is a great platform to test out and share ideas.
What have you been up to? I can't believe it is already February!
Great to see some tutorials on HubPages. I'm bookmarking this Hub as I may need to do a photo gallery in Wordpress some day.
Your wordpress sites look great indeed. I dunno much about Wordpress but nowadays many revenue sharing sites use the Wordpress platform. Takes time getting used to, like most other applications. Thanks & cheers!
